You may have purchased all the back-to-school supplies your children need and helped them select the perfect outfit for the first day of school. But if they have not had a comprehensive vision screening and eye exam, your students are not completely ready for a great start to the new school year.
“Most schools do vision screenings and do a good job of identifying the more easily detectable vision issues,” said Dr. Nancy Stephens, a therapeutic optometrist at Coastal Eye Associates. “But a comprehensive eye exam checks more than just vision. Of course, we check vision but we also check binocularity (how the eyes work together), pupils, visual fields, check for any color vision deficiencies and perform a dilated exam to check for overall health.”
Give Your Student the Best Start
Vision deficiencies come in all shapes and sizes but can have a profound impact on how a student performs in school. Many classroom issues such as distraction, inattention and underperformance can be traced to vision issues. “Undetected and untreated vision problems can easily affect learning capabilities and potential,” said Dr. Stephens. “A lot of times and especially with younger children, they don’t know how to explain why they are struggling.”
Parents and teachers can look for the following symptoms in a student if they suspect a vision issue:
- Squinting or covering one eye when reading
- Trouble reading
- Behavior issues
- Distraction, inattention
- Underperformance in school work
While these symptoms do not necessarily mean a vision issue is present, it is certainly worth the time to investigate and see if a student could benefit from vision correction. “It is so important to catch vision issues at any early age because it can make a huge difference in a child’s view of reading, education and their overall learning potential,” said Dr. Stephens.
Coastal Eye Associates a Leader in Eye Care
Coastal Eye Associates has five locations throughout the Bay area including Webster, Pasadena, Alvin, Texas City and Houston. The combination optometry and ophthalmology practice serves children (as young as newborns), adults and seniors. “We take great pride in treating each patient with kindness, patience and compassion,” said Dr. Stephens. “We are a family-oriented practice and are especially sensitive to the special needs of our seniors.”
Coastal Eye Associates is proud to serve as consultant to the Johnson Space Center Medicine Clinic and provide eye care services to the astronauts and their families.
From routine exams to complex surgery, the trust and wellbeing of each patient is the first priority at Coastal Eye Associates. All medical doctors are board certified ophthalmologists with extensive experience in all areas of ophthalmic medicine including vitreo-retinal surgery, glaucoma, pediatric and adult strabismus, oculoplastics, lasik refractive surgery and laser skin resurfacing. The doctors of optometry are board certified therapeutic optometrists with years of experience in comprehensive and routine eye examinations, treatment for ocular injuries and diseases, along with prescribing and fitting for glasses and contact lenses for all ages.
Dr. Stephens joined the elite group right out of optometry school, after having interned there while completing her studies at University of Houston College of Optometry. She also serves as clinical director at Advanced Laser Vision and Surgical Institute. “I really liked that this practice has integrated optometry and ophthalmology because it benefits our patients,” said Dr. Stephens. “We rarely have to refer our patients out to another specialist. Even if I didn’t work here, I would refer my patients who need an ophthalmologist to this practice.”
A Vision for the Community
Coastal Eye Associates has long been a leader in the community in the areas of service and education. “Another thing to love about this practice is that it is not introspective,” said Dr. Stephens. “Each of the doctors and the entire staff are committed to helping our communities in any way that we can.”
From local sponsorships and educational events to medical missions, Coastal Eye Associates cares about the local and global community. Most recently, Coastal Eye Associates is partnering with Advanced Laser Vision to provide backpacks filled with back-to-school supplies to area schools serving underprivileged students.
